Welcome to ServerStat and ServerStat Lite the statistics solution for Macintosh Internet servers. The Internet has recently experienced an explosion in the ease of distributing and retrieving information. Specifically, Gopher and the World Wide Web have significantly altered the way many people access information. The Macintosh‚Ñ¢ line of computers has traditionally been designed to tap into network services without a lot of difficulty. As a result, it becomes the machine of choice for setting up a Gopher or World Wide Web server on the Internet. Server programs are available for both Gopher and the World Wide Web which operate on all Macintosh computers. You can set up a server running Gopher and World Wide Web services on a Mac Plus. Performance will increase with the more powerful Macintoshes or PowerPCs.
ServerStat and ServerStat Lite were developed to analyze the log files created by Macintosh server programs and then create meaningful reports of server activity. ServerStat is a commercial program and has some additional capabilities beyond ServerStat Lite which is a shareware program. This manual covers both programs and makes note of differences in the two products where appropriate. At the present time, ServerStat and ServerStat Lite analyze logs from GopherSurfer (freeware program developed by the University of Minnesota gopher://boombox.micro.umn.edu), MacHTTP (shareware program from Chuck Shotton http://www.biap.com), and WebStar (from StarNine® a commercial program http://www.starnine.com).

Manual Conventions
This manual assumes that you know how to operate your Macintosh or PowerPC. It also assumes you are familiar with the basic terminology such as menus, pointing, clicking, highlighting, etc. If you are unfamiliar with these terms, see the User’s Guide that came with your Macintosh. In addition, the manual will present steps you are to complete as a sequence in a numbered list. Anything the user should type will appear in a typewriter font. Keys on your keyboard will be entered inside <>’s. For example, the return key would be written <return>.

Notes will appear between two lines like this text does. It usually represents a hint or tip about using a particular interface item or command.
